Heath Zenith 250-Watt Quartz Motion-Sensing Light, White #SL-5525-WH.Heath Zenith’s SL-5525 bundles a motion sensor and a single halogen light in one package. The unit includes a selectable timer that lets you set the amount of time the lights stay on after motion stops (an automatic photocell deactivates the lamp in daylight). Alternatively, a manual override enables you to turn the light on and off at will via an existing indoor switch. The sensor has a range of up to 70 feet and detects motion in a 180-degree range with a maximum 3,400-square-foot detection zone. Hazards of Halogen Light Light output excellent. But what happens if the motion-detector timer fails to shut off and the high-heat producing halogen bulb stays on?In my case, it caused the outer plastic housing to melt down and possibly to have caught fire, just two weeks after installed. Fortunately, it was self-limiting, but the heat blistered the paint on the wood siding on which the light was mounted. The siding could have, but did not, catch fire, or else the house could have burned down. The manufacturer said it shouldn’t happen. But it did. And if it happened once, it can happen again.
Very Bright! Quality Chasis I was looking for something really bright, that will really shine under a patio covered outdoor area where it would be like a regular indoor room. And boy did it! I had 150W for that wasn’t bright enough. Since my area is smaller I adjusted sensor to be minimum, and it works good for that purpose. Can’t comment on sensing open areas for this model, but I have the 2-light version and that can keep the lights on many hours with few flies/bugs continue drawn to the lights.I read the review on possible burning/fire if sensor/logic failed and kept the light on. So I took a closer look at the casing. The glass seems like real glass (heavy), not cheap clear plastic. The chasis/enclosure is heavy too. It’s definitely not plastic. Seems like metal as that’s how it feels when I knock on it with my knuckles. There is reflective sheeting around the bulb too. The thing that locks the glass to the enclosure is a metal sheet hinge, which shouldn’t melt either. The arm between the light casing and the wall is also the same, metal-feel material. The only thing feel plastic is the motion sensor below, but it’s like a good 4 inches so shouldn’t be an issue.This light fixture is bright enough where I’m going to order couple of more to shine onto my dark street in the cul-de-sac, where some neighbors were the victim of 3am car burglary. My only concern is whether a driving rain storm could cause water to enter the light enclosure. A normal rain shouldn’t, but strong rain that has the right slant might get a few drops in. But given the glass is not sealed all the way around, including the bottom, any “drops” of water *IF* gets in should just come right out also.
Custom Motion Light I bought the Heath Zenith SL-5525 250 Watt Motion Sensing Light, to create a custom inside motion light for our garage. My wife at some times of the year, leaves and comes home when it’s dark. We wanted a light that would really illuminate the doorway leading from the house into the garage, and the same when coming in the side door of the garage to the house. The little battery operated motion lights were too much like a night light, and not bright enough. I bought a round electrical box for this to attach to (in white) and an extension cord (also white). I cut off the receptacle end of the cord and wired the motion light to it. Then mounted the light to the round electrical box and finally, mounted the setup to the inside garage wall. When plugged into an outlet, I have a 250 watt motion detecting light that automatically comes on when there’s movement and when it’s dark enough. Great solution for what I wanted. I know this is typically an outside light fixture, but also works indoors. I probably wouldn’t recommend this inside the house, but in a garage area, works perfectly. I would recommend this light to anyone wanting a nice bright light to cover a specific area, detecting motion.
