alpan s.s. solar landscaping lights 6 pk.model # 247912 The lights are nice to look at, the glass lens construction is a great plus as compared to some acrylic lenses of other products but the plastic top that the s.s. cap screws down to is fairly flimsy. This s.s. cap houses the VERY, VERY exclusive 3.2 V lithium ion AA battery and about this later ! It is held down with screws that screw down into the 4 aluminum posts. On 2 of my lanterns the glass lens was loose and was rotating which could make moisture getting inside possible. Checking out the problem led to the conclusion that tightening down the screws would be the solution of course. The tightening was realy hard, given the impression that the screws were already tightened to the max. so I took the screws out to see what the problem was. No indication of what made it impossible to screw the screws futrher down, but it looks that the screws were of the self tapping kind which should make a person immediately aware of the possibility of cross threading ! Putting the plasic caps back over the alum. posts and holding it STRAIGHT in place is tricky, especially when you realy should be aware of the possibility of cross threading. Checking the other lanterns that looked O.K. revealed that this plastic cap was screwed down to the point to where this cap was warped to keep the glass lens in place properly and so I proceded screwing the screws down also to this point. It was very hard and the screwdriver keeps slipping but it did work ! The WARPED plastic cap is what the lens prevents from rotating. Now to the the special Li. ion rechargeable AA batteries which according to Alpan are easily obtainable thru your retailer and of course thru Alpan ! TRY TO FIND THESE 3.2 V 250 ma/h RECHARGEABLE AA’s through your regular retailer or even thru the Internet. You’ll find SOME comparible batteries on the Internet that might work or not work because they are all 3.6 to 3.7 V and of higher capacities which is O.K. but look at the prices and they will put you down for an average of about 10 to $12.- a piece ! When I got these lights, in this case not through Amazon, but cheaper and with the same very good no questions asked return policy, at a local retailer, the batteries on some of the lights were not charging up. Had to return them twice, no questions asked, but the third time was the same problem, this time 2 batteries were bad and I decided to call ALPAN about it despite the fact that the instructions on the paperwork that came with it said NOT to return merchandise to the retailer in case of problems and despite the fact that the papers also say that, now get this, EXCLUDED from the 1 yr. waranty are the LED bulbs and the batteries !! Some of the main things that make or break the solar light system are excluded from waranty ! This is like buying a car and you find out that the waranty does NOT cover the engine and the electrical system. Alpan’s lady at the so called service dept. said “I don’t write the waranty policy” and said basically TOUGH LUCK. Asking to speak to her boss or manager did not go anywhere since she sounded that she maybe could have been perhaps the daughter of the owner ! After a little more probing on my side she suggested that despite that I had the third set of lights within just ONE WEEK from the others, I could send the defective batteries to them for exchange. Spending extra money for shipp. & handl. to make a product work that was flawed from the beginning with again no waranty on batteries I told her big deal, said good bye and ended to coversation. This somewhat lengthy review is only a warning for other prospective buyers of ALPAN products what kind of company they are dealing with, and to be careful also, since a reputable place like AMAZON and also others, might not realy know what kind of manufacturers they are representing and dealing with. I hope that this review might be of help to others.
Nice looking lights. These are the best solar lights I have ever purchased. The starlight design that it gives off really adds to atmosphere as you walk up the sidewalk during the evening hours.I don’t know what others are talking about when they say it is extremely difficult find replacement batteries because I’ve found them in every hardware store that I shop at. All I had to do is ask someone.I will be purchasing more of these because I had 3 out of 6 go out on me. NOT the fault of the quality but becuase I did not heed the instructions and left them out during a harsh Nebraska winter. Althought the light design sure did look good shining upon freshly fallen (and encrusted) snow.
Good lighting Easy install, Item throws out good lighting. I ranked it a 4 out of because it’s hit or miss with the battery life.
