Great little power failure light. Or just for living GREEN This new version is different than what was sold previously. The new one is red plastic and MUCH brighter. The 2 brightness levels are clearly different, unlike the prior blue version. Hard to believe it came from the same manufacturer. It’s intended to replace kerosene lamps in the developing world so that’s what you should compare it to. Much brighter than a flame, not as bright as an incandescent bulb. But unlike anything we normally use, the power doesn’t involve human intervention or control. And the on-going cost is zip.Highly recommended for power failures and just for living green. I really like the idea of using sun power in the evening when I’m just hanging out. I will also hang one in the shower when I take one at night. The light is more than adequate and it doesn’t mind moisture since it’s designed for the tropics. It’s light as a feather but built tough so a small child can carry it around easily. With up to 8 hours of light on low, makes for a nice bright night light. If you’re looking more for a solar reading light, check out the If you want an AC charger, just search for “Nokia AC-3U” on Amazon and get one for a few bucks. The battery can be replaced (if needed) with a standard 3.6v NMH rechargeable cordless phone type “2/3AAA”. Just unscrew the base from the top to replace. The only trick is the threads are tight and it takes some effort. I thought it was sealed at first.Oh yes, profits from your purchase help the d.light mission to bring light to the developing world. You can get it from dlight design directly at the same price and get free shipping to boot.Their mission statement:”Enable households without reliable electricity to attain the same quality of life as those with electricity. We will begin by replacing every kerosene lantern with clean, safe and bright light”.
Great – durable light for 3rd world travel This is my fourth S10 lantern.. These smaller lanterns are durable and compact enough to travel with. We use them in Nepal on travel where load shedding (rolling power outages) can last up to 18 hours a day. This gives us adequate light to function at night. Solar charging allows me to charge by day and use in the evening. The light is not super powerful but is enough to be usable. We carry it from room to room as needed when the power is out (frequently). The previous S10 lanterns I purchased were left behind as gifts to locals and ex-pats and to my knowledge are still working great and much appreciated. If you need a bigger more powerful light the Nova also by D.light should be considered. It has also performed very well for several years in the same circumstances.
