Cheap but fragile It was Christmas and we had a new puppy. We needed to keep him away from the Christmas tree and out of certain rooms that had not been puppy-proofed. We ordered a whole bunch of these because they were inexpensive. They served the purpose, but they proved to be rather fragile. In particular the end pieces that serve as the stand tend to come off because the screws are too short and the wood they screw into is thin and splinters. A design issue prevents improving on this, since the slats of the fence abut on the end when it’s closed. Thus there really isn’t enough clearance to put longer screws or any kind of bracing.
What are you looking for? This product is good if it’s what you are looking for. I bought one from another company to provide a visual “reminder” for my dogs not to go into certain areas of my house and it worked perfectly. Yes, it’s flimsy, but I decided it was something that worked well for me and thought I could build one myself. After pricing lumber and hardware at my local lumber store and realizing I didn’t have the power tools to build it, I decided I couldn’t build it for the price. While surfing Amazon I found this for $3 less than the other website and bought 2 more.If you are looking for a gate that will “fortify” a certain area this is not the product to buy. However, if you are looking for a visual deterent, this works really well. I have a 2 year old Chocolate Lab and a 7 month old Australian Sheppard. My hallways are too wide for a regular baby gate so I had to find an alternative to keep them out and I have found that this works really well for that. It folds back easily to walk through, is light weight and I can fold it back against the wall when I don’t need it. No more stepping over (and often tripping over) a baby gate and it looks better too.Like I said, if you are looking for something very sturdy that will physically keep pets and children out of an area this is not the product to buy; however, it works well as a visual reminder for dogs that know they are not supposed to go into a certain area. The bottom is 6 inches off the ground, so it may not work well for short pets.
Expanding fence This is a light weight expanding gate suitable for keeping small dogs and children out of specific areas. It is not recommended for use at the top of a stairway since it can easily be knocked over. Its light weight makes it easy to move about but at the same time does not make it very durable. I would be reluctant to use it outdoors without applying several coats of a urethane finish first. Care should also be taken with small children to insure that they do not get little fingers pinched by closing or opening the product.
