Installing landscape lighting is easy, but keep in mind that it requires more than just the lighting fixtures. Landscape lighting systems also require:Transformer – The transformer is the power supply for your fixtures. It plugs into a standard household 110v outlet. The total lamp wattage of all fixtures connected to a transformer must be less than the capacity of the transformer. To determine which transformer you need, add up the wattage of all lamps and add 10% more as a safety factor. Example: If you’re installing five light fixtures rated at 20 watts each, you will need a transformer that can accomodate at least 110 watts. (TRANSFORMER SIZE = TOTAL WATTAGE OF LAMPS x 1.1)Cable – This is the electrical wire that runs from your transformer to your individual light fixtures. Determine the length of cable needed by measuring the distance from the outlet to the farthest fixture location. Adding branches of cable is recommended for lights that are not located in a straight line from the transformer to the farthest fixture, so include the length of cable that branches off the main line. Remember: always leave a couple extra feet of cable per fixture for potential repositioning. Variety of finishes based on availability. Ideal for placement along walkways. Aluminum shade and stem. Nice lights for pathways Got these lights to replace some pathway lights around my front sidewalk. Kichler makes good stuff, and these are professional grade lights. Better quality than the ones you buy in a home store. They are pretty ruggedly built, and the paint finish seems like it will be durable. They use an automotive style bulb and they are pretty bright. They come with a large heavy plastic base that you can bury just under the surface. In a couple windstorms, they haven’t started to lean over like some others I’ve had. If you want an unobtrusive fixture to just cast light on a pathway or sidewalk, this is a good choice. Docked one star for two reasons:1. These use an automotive-style bulb that can be hard to find. You need to go to an auto parts store, or just order an extra here on Amazon. Basically, it’s the same bulb that is used in turn signals and marker lights. I guess if you wanted amber or red lights you could swap the clear bulb for colored bulb. Getting LED replacements isn’t easy and they are expensive. I’ve tried a couple and they are not very good. I wish it used a more standard landscape bulb.2. The top cover is hard to remove to change lights. there’s three screws that hold it on and you have lie on the ground to unscrew them The aluminum housing always make the screws bind up over time. I put a little graphite lube on them when I run them in so it deposits inside the threads. Makes it easier to get back out later without gumming things up.Overall, a nice choice when you want to step up a bit from the home store fixtures, but don’t want to pay the lighting store prices.
