High winds are normal and we have doubled the number of tie points on the original canopy and secured the metal frame with lag screws and straps to our outside deck. Once a year, prior to installing the canopy for the summer season, we apply ArmorAll for additional ultraviolet protection and to waterproof. Our original canopy gave four seasons of service and could probably be pressed further. But with our 40 mph sustained winds, gusting to 70 mph is not uncommon, we have chosen to replace rather than press the old canopy. The replacement appears to be of the same material and quality as the original. We won’t actually install the new canopy until May 2013. For safety we have grounded the frame at two points with #10 copper wire and a 6′ copper grounding rod(lightning is also common here).
