This concise and extremely accessible presentation of the path of Tibetan Buddhism by the best known Buddhist teacher in the world shows how to apply basic Buddhist principles in our lives.
This fundamental anthology is vital for practicing and aspiring Buddhists Lighting The Way presents three fundamental Buddhist teachings offered by the Dalai Lama to Western students. “Principles of Buddhism” offers basic insight to understanding the Four Noble Truths of the Buddha Shakyamuni, upon which all other teachings are based. “Teachings on the Eight Verses on Training the Mind” gives commentary on a classic text of Tibetan spiritual writing known as “lojong”, or mind training. And the Dalai Lama’s words concerning Atisha’s “Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment” discusses one of the most crucial texts to a serious practitioner of Buddhism. This fundamental anthology is vital for practicing and aspiring Buddhists, as well as scholars of Buddhism striving to better understand a centuries-old faith in a modern-day context. Highly recommended, especially for library Buddhist Studies collections.
An Essential Guide I have read and reviewed several books by the Dalai Lama here and this one is perhaps the one I hold in highest regard so far. I say that because in this novel the Dalai Lama brings to the reader’s attention an overview of the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths and other Buddhist principles which are deeply insightful. Following this a commentary on the texts “Eight Verses on Mind Training” and “Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment.” These two works are worth the price of the book in themselves.Like all of the Dalai Lama’s works I have absorbed and learned from this piece and strongly recommended it to anyone who is a practitioner of Buddhism or looking for a guide through the craziness that is life today. As I have said before, if you are looking for assistance in calming oneself and trying to find peace of mind and understanding the Dalai Lama is perhaps one of the best guides you will find and the wisdom found in this book can be one of your greatest assets.
